Vivo S1 Pro
Vivo S1 Pro
Vivo's S1 Pro places a strong emphasis on style, and
in this aspect, it certainly excels. The phone boasts an attractive design with
its distinct diamond-shaped camera module. Despite measuring 8.68mm in
thickness, it's slightly weighty. A 6.38-inch Super AMOLED display graces the
front, offering full-HD+ resolution. The convenience of an in-display
fingerprint sensor is also on offer, which performs well.
Under the hood, a Snapdragon 665 octa-core SoC powers
the device alongside 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The software experience
is delivered through Funtouch OS 9.2, based on Android 9 Pie. Unfortunately, a
fair amount of pre-installed bloatware can be frustrating. Performance is
generally satisfactory, although gaming can lead to a bit of heat buildup.
Battery endurance proves solid, with the 4,500mAh
battery easily sustaining a day and a half of regular use. On the photography
front, a primary 48-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture captures images. In
favorable lighting conditions, image quality holds up well, although it dips in
low-light scenarios. When it comes to selfies, the front-facing camera delivers
impressive results, particularly in daylight conditions.

Reviews
Vivo S1 Pro design and display
The Vivo
S1 Pro carries on the tradition of being an aesthetically pleasing device,
maintaining the legacy of its predecessor, the Vivo S1. While the distinctive
diamond pattern on the back has been replaced, the S1 Pro offers a range of
captivating gradient finishes. Our variant, named 'Jazzy Blue,' is accompanied
by 'Dreamy White' and 'Mystic Black' options. Although slightly robust at
8.68mm in thickness, the phone's 186g weight becomes noticeable during
prolonged one-handed usage. The device's contoured edges and gradually curving
back contribute to a comfortable grip, with the glossy finish managing to avoid
excessive slipperiness. Notably, the back isn't composed of glass; Vivo
continues to utilize laminated plastic for this purpose.
On the
front, a 6.38-inch Super AMOLED display graces the device, offering full-HD+
resolution. The integrated in-display fingerprint sensor functions efficiently,
accompanied by a selection of visually appealing unlock animations. While the
presence of face unlock adds another layer of security, it's not as swift as
comparable implementations seen in other smartphones within this price range.
The pre-applied screen protector, while a thoughtful addition, can be irksome
due to its tendency to graze against the skin during gesture-based
interactions.
The
button layout on the Vivo S1 Pro is well-executed. Positioned on the left is a
tray capable of accommodating either two Nano-SIM cards or a single Nano-SIM
along with a microSD card. However, a separate slot dedicated solely to memory
expansion would have been preferable. The bottom houses a USB Type-C port and a
speaker, while the top features a headphone jack. The rear of the phone showcases
its unique design elements. In addition to the captivating color scheme, the
slim camera module stands out for its minimalist profile, barely protruding
from the body. Adjacent to the module is the LED flash, complemented by Vivo's
logo and tagline just below.
Inside
the box, the Vivo S1 Pro arrives with a customary set of accessories, including
a silicone case, Type-C cable, 18W charger and handset.
Vivo S1
Pro performance and battery life
The Vivo S1 Pro steps up as a reliable daily companion
with a design that's sure to grab attention. Setting it apart from its segment
peers, the camera module's unique aesthetic deviates from the commonplace
vertical camera arrays. The display's impressive brightness ensures excellent
legibility, even in direct sunlight. Vivid colors owing to the AMOLED panel and
well-defined text and icons add to the display's appeal. The Snapdragon 665 handles
multitasking adeptly, although it's not the most robust chip for demanding
gaming scenarios.
PUBG Mobile struggled to maintain a smooth framerate
even at the Low graphics preset. While playable, the game experienced
occasional jerkiness. Thankfully, overheating was not an issue, even after an
extended 30-minute gaming session. The singular speaker isn't exceedingly loud,
producing somewhat tinny audio. Nonetheless, the vibrant display enhances the
video viewing experience. The Vivo S1 Pro is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery
that comfortably extends over a day and a half, even with intensive usage. Our
HD video battery loop test attested to its stamina, clocking in at an
impressive 17 hours and 7 minutes. While Vivo's Dual Engine Fast Charge feature
is in place, the included charger doesn't deliver swift refueling for such a
sizable battery. In testing, the S1 Pro reached 31 percent in half an hour and
approximately 61 percent in an hour, while a full charge took about two and a
half hours.
Turning to its camera capabilities, the Vivo S1 Pro
boasts an array of four rear cameras: a 48-megapixel primary camera with an
f/1.8 aperture, an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture, a
2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. On the front, a
32-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture takes the spotlight.
Navigating the camera app is intuitive, with primary shooting modes placed
conveniently above the shutter button. However, important controls for features
like the ultra-wide camera, bokeh, and macro modes reside in a separate
carousel menu, requiring extra taps for access—this setup wasn't particularly
user-friendly during our usage.
In well-lit conditions, the Vivo S1 Pro captures
serviceable landscape shots, offering decent detail and acceptable colors,
though images may lack depth. Instances of grain can be noted at the frame's
edges. While HDR intervenes when necessary, its results aren't consistently
impressive. Some images exhibit an unnatural bluish hue. Close-ups fare better,
delivering appealing bokeh and detailed objects. The wide-angle camera
introduces an interesting perspective but may exhibit inaccuracies in color
representation.
